Respondus LockDown Browser

Summary

Learn how to set up and take Canvas tests and quizzes in the Respondus Lockdown Broswer.

Body

Description

This secure testing tool integrates with Canvas and is designed to improve the consistency of online assessments and reduce student costs associated with proctoring.  The Respondus LockDown Browser is a standalone app that students use to take an exam instead of a standard web browser (such as Chrome or Firefox). The LockDown Browser blocks access to other apps, websites, and screen-sharing during exams.

Environment

Canvas in a web browser

Who can access

This tool is available to all OHIO students, faculty and staff. Please note the LockDown Browser app must be downloaded from the OHIO-specific URL in order to work with the OHIO Canvas environment.

Instructors

Enable LockDown Browser in a Canvas Course

  1. Log in to Canvas at canvas.ohio.edu
  2. Navigate to your Canvas course and open the Quizzes section.
  3. Create or edit a quiz and publish it.
  4. In the course navigation menu, select LockDown Browser.
  5. Find your quiz in the list and select the dropdown arrow next to it.
  6. Select Settings and choose “Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam.”
  7. Save your settings.

Note: OHIO's Respondus LockDown Browser includes 200 "seats" for use of their webcam-based proctoring tool, Monitor. These seats (which equal one student in one course) are available on a first‑come, first‑served basis. Because Monitor involves additional scrutiny that may increase student stress, we recommend enabling it only for high‑stakes assessments where elevated monitoring is truly necessary. Proctortrack continues to be available for webcam‑based proctoring.

Best Practices

  • Create an ungraded practice quiz to help students test their setup before a graded quiz.
  • Ensure that the Canvas quiz content is accessible
  • Review and share support materials with students before using the tool for graded assessments.
    • Note that the steps for students will differ based on whether the quizzes are Classic or New Quizzes format in Canvas. See item #2 in the Students: How to Prepare section below.
  • Get support from Respondus anytime through their help material or submit a ticket for more advanced troubleshooting.

Outcome: Your quiz has been connected to Respondus.

How to Prepare

  1. Download and install the Respondus LockDown Browser using this link, which is specific to Ohio University.
  2. Please note, each time you log into Canvas using Respondus LockDown Browser it will prompt you to complete your two-factor authentication.
  3. Use the browser to access and complete quizzes that require it.
    1. New Quizzes: Start in a regular browser (e.g. Chrome) and select the quiz link. The LockDown Browser will automatically launch the quiz if it has already been installed. If the LockDown Browser has not already been installed, students will be prompted to download and install the latest version. Once installation is complete, return to the quiz link in the regular browser and select it again; the LockDown Browser will launch automatically to open the quiz.
    2. Classic Quizzes: Launch the LockDown Browser application, log into Canvas and navigate to the quiz link.
  4. Complete any practice quizzes assigned by your instructor to ensure your setup works correctly.
  5. Get support from Respondus anytime through their help material or submit a ticket for more advanced troubleshooting.

Outcome: You can now complete your quiz using the Respondus Lockdown Browser.
