Domain name registration

1. Domain name registration manages the ownership and Domain Name System (DNS) settings of the domain name

   • Requests for domain name registration should be submitted through Technology Help Center. Visit the Domain Name service page to submit a request.

2. Domain name registration does not include email hosting or website hosting.

   • OIT offers other solutions for website hosting for both personal websites and static business websites, along with our primary Web CMS platform depending on your need. 

Transferring a domain name

A domain name registrar is a company or service where users can buy and manage domain names. Examples include Google Domains, GoDaddy, NameCheap, etc. 

1. Some registrars place restrictions on when a domain name can be transferred based on how recently it was purchased or certain information was updated. 

2. Domain names must be “unlocked” prior to OIT requesting a transfer. The process to unlock your current domain name varies depending on where your domain name is currently registered.

3. An authorization code from the current registrar is required to complete a domain name transfer. The process to obtain your domain’s authorization code varies depending on where your domain name is currently registered.

5. Visit the Domain Name service page to submit a request for domain name transfers 

Changes to DNS settings

Requests for domain name DNS changes can be submitted through the Technology Help Center. Visit the Domain Name service page to submit a request.

Forwarding options

1. A domain name can be forwarded to another domain name or a page on another domain name. 

2. Email addresses can be forwarded from your domain (ex: user@mydomain.com) to another email address, such as your @ohio.edu email address. Note: Email forward is a 1-1 relationship and a single address cannot be forwarded to multiple other email addresses. To do this, please establish a service account or shared mailbox and forward the email to that address. 

3. Requests for email forwarding can be submitted through the Technology Help Center. Visit the Domain Name service page to submit a request.
