Body

For help with Panopto technical issues, troubleshooting, or feature-related questions, we recommend utilizing OHIO Office of Information Technology (OIT) Support, or exploring Panopto's Documentation Library of support resources. More support options are detailed in the "Get Help" section below.

Following the merging of Panopto Blackboard accounts into Canvas in summer 2025, all users should access Panopto through Canvas or by selecting the Canvas login option when accessing Panopto directly.

Getting Started

  • Instructors and students should always access Panopto through Canvas (steps are listed later on this page). Please note:

  • Instructors are given creator access in Panopto which allows them to record, edit, and change video settings.

  • Students using Canvas are given viewer access in Panopto and can only view videos, unless completing a Panopto Assignment.

  • Staff who do NOT teach any courses will set up and access Panopto differently from instructors and students (steps are listed later on this page).

Setting Up Your Access in Panopto

Instructors using Canvas

  1. Log in to Canvas at canvas.ohio.edu.

  2. Navigate to the course for which you would like to create the recorded lecture or presentation.

  3. Configure your Canvas course with Panopto to set up an integrated account.

  • In the left navigation of your course, select the Panopto Video tool.

  • If the Panopto Video tool is not in your left navigation, it may be hidden. Select Settings from the left navigation and then select the Navigation tab. If Panopto appears in the bottom section, which is hidden from students, drag-and-drop it into the course navigation and then select Save.

Note: Performing this action creates a course folder in Panopto and provides your account with Creator access to the folder. You will complete this same action for each course using Panopto.

Students using Canvas

  1. Log in to Canvas at canvas.ohio.edu.

  2. To view Panopto recordings within your course content, navigate to your course and click on the appropriate link.

Non-instructional staff

  1. Go to https://ohiouniversity.hosted.panopto.com/.

  2. Select Ohio University Single Sign-on from the drop-down.

  3. Select Sign in.

  • Upon authentication, your Panopto account is automatically created with Viewer access.

  • If you need Creator access, complete steps 1-3 above, then contact the IT Service Desk and request non-instructional staff Panopto Creator access.

How-To Basics

Navigating Panopto

Downloading the recorder from Canvas

The creator role is required to access and download the Panopto Recorder app. As viewers, students are only provided access to the recorder app through Panopto video assignments created in Canvas. The following procedure must be performed on each device to be used for recording.  However, once the Panopto app is installed on a device, you need only repeat these steps when an update is required.

  1. Select Panopto Video from the course menu on the left.

  2. On the Panopto Content page, select the Create button, located to the right of the search field.

  3. Choose the first option in the drop-down menu, Record in Application.

  4. From the pop-up window, choose from the Download Installer list to download the appropriate app to your computer.

    • Follow the prompts to download and open the Panopto app.

Creating and Sharing Your Panopto Video

Recording a video

  • Download the latest version of the Panopto Recorder app to create recordings of PowerPoint, video, and audio presentations.

Captions, audio descriptions, and editing a Panopto recording

  • Automatic Machine Captioning - All new videos created will have captions added to them automatically. Captions will automatically load with time stamps that line with the video. Though these machine generated captions are mostly accurate you may notice some incorrect talk to text translation. Captions for some videos may be more accurate than others based on audio quality. These captions can easily be corrected and we encourage users to edit captions in support of creating accessible content. More information on how to edit captions can be found here: How to edit or delete captions.

  • How to disable Automatic Captioning - This feature is enabled at the folder level and can be disabled by folder if desired. To disable Automatic Machine Captions for a folder, follow these steps:

    • In the folder you want to disable ASR Captioning, expand the drop-down menu from the upper right corner and select Settings.

    • On the Settings window, select the Settings Tab.

    • Scroll to the section Captions, select the drop-down menu for Automatically caption new sessions, and then select None.

    • ASR Captions will not be applied to any new video uploaded to this folder.  Please note: This will not be applied to existing videos in the folder.

Adding tags and smart chapters to a Panopto recording

  • How to use tags - Add tags to videos as a way to help users browse and explore specific content on a Panopto site.

  • How to enable smart chapters - Smart Chapters are not automatically added on your videos, but there is an option to enable them on a per-video basis.

  • How to use smart chapters - Add, remove, and edit smart chapters from your Panopto videos to create an automatic table of contents.

Sharing a Panopto Recording, Assignment, or Quiz

Sharing inside Canvas (instructors only)

Sharing outside of Canvas (anyone with creator access)

Managing discussion notifications

How to use discussion notifications - Receive daily email notification if any comments were added to your videos or replies were made to your comments.

Restoring archived Panopto content

  • How to restore archived content - recordings that have not been viewed in 24 months will be automatically archived. The archive process keeps videos organized, with the most recent content readily accessible while preserving older content in a less conspicuous location.

    • Note: Any user with Viewer access may restore an archived video. Restoration can take up to 48 hours.
