Customizing Your SharePoint Navigation

Description

Add and remove pages, links, and labels from your SharePoint site navigation. 

Note: Site members and site owners can customize a SharePoint site’s navigation. 

Environment

Web browser on a Windows PC, Mac, or Chromebook.

Procedure

Add a Page to Site Navigation:

  1. Navigate to the page that you’d like to add to the navigation.
  2. Select Promote in the top left menu.
  3. Select add page to navigation.
  4. To edit your page’s location in the navigation, in the top menu, select Edit.

  1. In the left editing menu, select and hold your page’s title to drag it to your desired location.
    • Note: You can also select the ellipses (…) to the right of the page title to move/edit the page. The following options are presented after selecting the ellipses.
      • Edit: Change the display name or link.
      • Move Up: Move up in site navigation.
      • Move down: Move down in site navigation.
      • Make sub link: Make the page a child to a parent page. 
      • Remove: Delete the page.

  • Important: At the bottom of the left editing pane, select Save.

Outcome: Your page has been added to your SharePoint site menu.

Add a Link or Label to Site Navigation

  1. Navigate to your SharePoint site.
  2. In the top menu, select Edit.
  3. In the left editing menu, hover your cursor between menu items. A green plus sign (+) will appear. Select it.

  1. Under Choose an option, select whether you're adding a link or label.
    • Link: You may wish to link to a resource that your team views frequently (ex: a specific document in your SharePoint library, an Ohio University website, etc.)
    • Label: A label can act like a container for sub links. In this example, “Products” is a label organizing the sub links to different product pages.

  1. In the left editing menu, select the ellipses (…) to edit the link, move it, or make it a sub link.
    • Note: You can also drag and drop the link to change its place in the navigation.
  2. Important: At the bottom of the left editing pane, select Save.

Outcome: Your link or label has been saved to the site navigation.

Delete a SharePoint Page, Link, or Label from Navigation

  1. Navigate to your SharePoint site.
  2. In the top menu, select Edit.
  3. In the left editing menu, select the ellipses (…) to the right of the page, link, or label you'd like to delete. 
  4. Select Remove.
  5. Important: At the bottom of the left editing pane, select Save.

Outcome: Your page, link, or label has been removed from the navigation.
