Scanning in Spirion

The Office of Information Security at Ohio University conducts monthly scans to identify sensitive data stored on machines with Spirion installed. You will receive a notification via email or a TeamDynamix Ticket requesting that you remediate the sensitive data from your device promptly if a significant amount of sensitive data is detected. Upon receiving such a notification, please follow the steps outlined in the Article - Spirion Results Remediation to either remove the sensitive data or appropriately mark any false positives. If you wish to perform a scan for sensitive data on your own device at any time, please refer to the directions provided below.

Starting a Basic Scan

A basic scan uses Ohio University default configurations to scan your computer for Credit Card, Social Security, Driver's License, and Bank Account numbers.

  1. From the Search Wizard Screen click Start Search Now.

  2. Spirion will begin scanning your workstation.

  3. If results are discovered, continue to Results Remediation.

  4. If no results are discovered, continue to Starting a Custom Scan.

Starting a Custom Scan

If "Start Search Now" did not find any sensitive data, or you want to customize any scan configurations, follow these steps.

Configuring these settings manually ensures your workstation is using the correct scan configuration. A custom scan allows specifying what locations and data types you want to search. For instance, if you want to know if you have any files on your machine that contain unencrypted passwords, you can configure a custom scan to accommodate this.

  1. From the Search Wizard Screen, select Continue Search Wizard.
  2. Select Configure Search.
  3. Select Social Security NumbersCredit Card NumbersBank Account Numbers, and Driver Licenses (or any additional elements you are searching for).
  4. Select Next.
  5. Leave default location settings unless you have a specific location you are targeting. Select Next.
  6. Verify selections and select Finish.
  7. Spirion will begin scanning your workstation.
  8. If results are discovered, continue to Results Remediation.
  9. If no results are discovered, "Congratulations! Spirion did not locate any sensitive data and no further action is required". If you have reason to believe Spirion is not functioning correctly, please contact your Spirion liaison or the Ohio University Service Desk.
