Managed iPads at Ohio University

If you have an OHIO issued iPad, it is highly beneficial for that device to be enrolled in OIT's device management system. Managed iPads are safer to use, easier to maintain, easier to purchase software for with university funds and require less effort to maintain than unmanaged iPads.

Benefits of Managed iPads

  • Managed iPads are maintained remotely to comply with OHIO's security standards, such as strong passcodes, encryption, and secure network configurations. This protects your important data while you use the device, while the device is stored and protects both the data and the device from unauthorized access.
  • If your iPad is lost or stolen, OHIO's management system has the ability to remotely wipe sensitive data. This prevents unauthorized access to private information stored on the device.
  • Other benefits of remote management are: ease of troubleshooting issues, installing necessary updates, and configuring settings without physically accessing your device.
  • The management system can distribute apps to your iPad efficiently. Whether it’s productivity tools, communication apps, or custom software, using a managed device makes it easier to access the right apps for your role. All managed iPads come with Self Service portal that makes it easy to access common apps, such as Microsoft 365. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • For planning units and departments with multiple iPads, managing the devices ensures consistent configuration. This includes Wi-Fi settings, email accounts, and security features. Your team or your students will know what to expect when they use a device that is new to them.
  • Planning units and departments can also take advantage of quantity discounts and easy app and book transfers between devices, when their fleets of iPads are managed.
  • Easier device transfers between users are possible with managed devices. Without management, it is frustratingly possible for devices to be locked by Apple on the assumption that they are personally owned by employees. Management of an iPad asserts OHIO's ownership of the device in the Apple ecosystem.

OHIO uses Jamf Pro MDM to manage Apple devices. Contact OIT in a support ticket or check with your planning unit's IT staff to enroll OHIO iPads into management. There is no charge for this service.
