Selecting Microsoft Teams Meeting Templates

Description

Users have a variety of options for meeting templates when scheduling meetings using Microsoft Teams.  This article outlines several meeting types available and describes their function and features.

Solution 

Microsoft provides the following information outlining various meeting types in Microsoft Teams.  

Meeting Type Description Features Limitations
Teams Meeting General use meetings where each participant can speak and share their screens.
  • Screen share is enabled for all participants.
  • Pre-meeting chat
  • Agenda Sharing
  • Recording available.
  • Can be scheduled in a Teams channel.
  • Can utilize breakout rooms.
  • Only supports 1000 users for interactive features and up to 10,000 users for view only features.
Town Hall A meeting intended for a large audience where only organizers, co-organizers, and presenters can present.  All other participants are given a link which only allows them to view and use the Q&A feature to participate in the meeting.
  • Screen share enabled for organizers, co-organizers, and presenters only.
  • Mic and camera use is restricted to organizers, co-organizers, and presenters only.
  • Automatically records meetings.
  • Q&A enabled by default.
  • Meeting chat enabled for organizers, co-organizers, and presenters
  • Only supports up to 10,000 users.
  • Attendees can only view and interact with Q&A
Webinar A meeting intended for a large audience where everyone can participate.
  • Screen share enabled for all participants.
  • Automatically records meetings.
  • Organizer can request participants complete a registration form.
  • Only supports up to 1000 users.

Two additional options are available via education templates for use in classes and lectures:

Type Description
Classes Meeting chat enabled only during meeting for active discussion.
Lectures Meeting chat always enabled.
Note: These templates share the same limitations of general Teams meetings noted above. 

 

Outcome: Users should be able to identify the best option for their intended meeting.
