Description

Software for encrypting an individual Apple computer's storage disk. 

FileVault is built into macOS and is managed by Apple. The standard Ohio University Mac configuration will have FileVault enabled by default.

Access

How to Enable

  1. Open the “Finder,” which is typically located in the dock along the bottom of the screen.
  2. Click on the “Applications” button in the sidebar along the left of the window.
  3. Find and open “Self Service.
  4. Click on the search bar and search for “FileVault.
  5. Select “FileVault 2 Encryption.
  6. Click the “Enable” button and wait until a notification appears. After you see the following notification and you are ready, restart your Mac.
  7. Upon logging back in, a window will appear saying “Your administrator requires that you enable FileVault.” Click the “Enable Now” button on that window. Encryption will begin shortly after that.

  • Anyone with a managed Apple computer.
