Handling Incompletes in Canvas

Description: 

Allowing a student to complete an incomplete in a Canvas course requires working with OIT. Working with OIT will ensure that only the students who need access to the course materials get the appropriate access. This article will provide the instructions for configuring a course for an incomplete.

Granting the student access to the course: 

The information gathered in this step will be shared with OIT’s Canvas Administrators via a ticket. We will use the information to create a new enrollment section within your Canvas course, ensuring that the course is only made available to the users you specify within the dates specified. 

  • Determine the course you are working with, and copy either the URL or the Course ID. 

  • Determine who will need access to the course, and for how long. This would include yourself, the student, and any GAs or TAs that might be doing grading. 

    • You will need the Ohio University email address of each of the individuals that will need access to the course. 

    • Make sure to indicate which role the person should have in the course. 

  • Determine how long access will be needed. 

    • Provide a start and end, date and time for access. 

  • Once you have gathered the above information, select the Create Ticket button to the right of this screen.   

    • Select “I have a general request in Canvas”. 

    • In the Description box, note that you need to set up your course to allow an incomplete and provide the information from steps 1-3 above. 

Adjusting your due dates 

Now that you have your new enrollment section created, you and the specified users will have full access to the course.  This, however, does not automatically extend the due dates for your assignments and quizzes.  You will need to manually adjust each of those. 

  • In your course, navigate to the assignment or quiz that the student still needs to complete. 

    • Use the three-dot menu to select Assign To 

    • In the new pop up select Add to create a new Assign To grouping 

    • In the Assign To field, select the section that contains the word Incomplete 

    • Set your due date and time, as appropriate. 

    • Optionally, set your availability dates. 

    • Click Save 

  • Repeat these steps for any additional assignments or quizzes.
