Forwarding an email message as an attachment

Description

If you need to report a phishing scam or other problem message to the IT security office (security@ohio.edu), forwarding that message as an attachment is the best way to do so.

Environment

PC, Mac, Outlook, Catmail, Microsoft 365, Mac Mail

Solution

Outlook for Windows

  1. From your main Outlook window double-click the message to open it in its own window

  1. On the Message tab of that window's ribbon, go to Respond and click More

  1. Choose Forward as Attachment

  2. Alternative method using a keyboard shortcut in place of steps 1-3; from your main Outlook window, select the message and press Ctrl - Alt - F

Outlook for Mac

  1. In your main Outlook window right-click the message in your message list that you want to forward as an attachment

  1. Choose Forward Special

  1. Choose As Attachment

Outlook on the Web (Catmail)

  1. From your main OWA Outlook window, click New to create a new message

  1. At the upper right of the resulting new message pane, click the Open in a Separate Window icon

  1. Arrange your browser windows so that you can see both the new message window and the message list portion of your main OWA window, which may require resizing one or both windows

  1. Drag and drop the message you want to forward from your message list into the body of the new message window

  1. If the drag and drop worked, you will see an attachment icon for the message

Mac Mail

  1. In your main Mac Mail window, right-click (or Control-click) the message you want to forward

  1. Choose Forward as Attachment

Outcome: You should now be able to forward an email as an attachment.
