IT Service Desk - Technology Help Desk on Campus

Description

The IT Service Desk is located in the back of Bobcat Depot in Baker University Center 112 (Athens campus).  The service desk is staffed with IT student employees who have a passion for computer science, hardware, and software. 

Services:

The IT Service Desk in Bobcat Depot offers OHIO students, faculty, and staff the following services: 

Computer Help & Device Setup (Bobcat Depot purchases only)

The IT service desk provides free setup of your new device. This includes Microsoft Office install, Cloud Storage setup, and the data transfer from your old device.

 

Basic computer troubleshooting (any device) 

The IT service desk provides free initial diagnosis (15-minute limit) for computer hardware and software issues. In our experience, we have found most minor problems can be resolved quickly and efficiently during this initial diagnosis. We can help troubleshoot: 

  • Computers, monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, and most other computer peripherals

  • Hard drives, motherboards, power supplies, and RAM  

Additionally, we can help you install or update software using your OHIO ID. For assistance via phone, please call the Office of Information Technology Service Desk at 740-593-1222. A ticket for your work order may also be submitted via the Technology Help Center.

Note:

  • We cannot open computer cases and perform physical repairs. 

  • For severe hardware failure, we offer a computer repair service (see below). 

 

Computer Repair

For severe hardware failure, we offer a computer repair service. The service desk at the Bobcat Depot and IT Device Support are a Factory-Authorized Warranty Repair Center for Apple and Lenovo. We are also able to facilitate warranty repair for Microsoft devices. 

Eligibility

To be eligible for in-store repair, a device must be:  

  • An Apple computer or an Apple device manufactured no more than five (5) years ago (personally owned) 

  • Business class Lenovo/Dell (personally owned) 

  • A University-owned business class Lenovo/Dell computer 

  • Purchased at the Bobcat Depot with Safeware insurance 

  • Manufactured no more than five (5) years ago

We do not repair cell phones or tablets, but we are happy to talk through what repair options may be available.  
 
For inquiries about the repair eligibility for your device, please contact the IT Service Desk or visit us in person at Bobcat Depot, located in Baker University Center 112. If your computer does not qualify for repairs through the Office of Information Technology’s Tech Support, there are several repair companies near our campuses that can be found via an Internet search. 
 
Note: For assistance with repairing University-owned computers, please submit a support ticket with the info outlined in the University-Owned Computer section.

 

Repair Costs: 

Most software troubleshooting services are free. If your computer requires repair, the repair costs may be covered by a manufacturer warranty, a manufacturer extended warranty, or a Safeware warranty. 

If your computer is eligible for repair, but is not covered by one of these warranties, the IT Service Desk will speak with you on cost for any repairs before working on your device.

 

What to expect with each type of eligible repair:

An Apple device manufactured no more than five (5) years ago (personally owned) 

  • The service desk at the Bobcat Depot will run diagnostics, create a ticket with your information and remove the “Find My” feature on the computer.  Your computer will then be sent to our IT Device Support team located at Grosvenor Hall for repair. You can check the status of your repair by following the status of the ticket created by Tech Support. 

Business Class Lenovo/Dell (personally owned) 

  • The service desk at the Bobcat Depot will run diagnostics and create a ticket with your information.  

  • If you have purchased Safeware, the computer will be tagged and given to the Bobcat Depot store to send out for repairs.  

  •  If you have not purchased Safeware, the computer will be returned to you with the diagnostics and the ticket will be closed with the results of the diagnostics.   

University-Owned Computer 

  • Please submit a ticket through the Technology Help Center or send an email to servicedesk@ohio.edu.   

  • Be sure to add the following information:

    • That the device is University-owned 

    • Details on the issue you are experiencing (please include screen shots of error messages, if applicable) 

    • Campus location/remote

    • The days/times you are available for a call or technical visit 

    • If your calendar is up-to-date, you can include that information also 

  • The service desk at the Bobcat Depot will run initial diagnostics on your computer. If your issue requires physical repair or if there is a complex issue, your computer will be sent to the IT Device Support team located in Grosvenor Hall for repair. You can check on the status of the repair by referencing the ticket you entered.   

Dell branded laptop, purchased at Bobcat Depot with Safeware insurance and is a University-owned device.

  • Please submit a ticket through the Technology Help Center or send an email to servicedesk@ohio.edu.   

  • Be sure to add the following information:

    • That the device is University-owned 

    • Details on the issue you are experiencing (please include screen shots of error messages, if applicable) 

    • Campus location/remote

    • The days/times you are available for a call or technical visit 

    • If your calendar is up-to-date, you can include that information also 

 

Where to Go

Equipment can be dropped off at the IT Service Desk located in the back of The Bobcat Depot, Baker University Center 112. For in-office repair visits, faculty and staff may submit a work order/help ticket by calling the IT Service Desk at 740-593-1222, sending an email to servicedesk@ohio.edu, or submitting a ticket through on the Technology Help Center.
