Plagiarism Detection: Turnitin

Description

Turnitin helps instructors check student work for originality by comparing submitted text against a broad collection of sources and generating a Similarity Report that identifies matching content. Turnitin is available through Canvas using either the Canvas Plagiarism Framework or the Turnitin Feedback Studio external tool.

Access

Turnitin is accessed through Canvas. Instructors can use Turnitin in two ways:

  • Canvas Plagiarism Framework: Integrates Turnitin similarity checking into a standard Canvas assignment for a streamlined workflow.
  • Turnitin Feedback Studio: Provides a more robust Turnitin experience with additional tools for reviewing submissions and providing feedback.

Who can access

  • Instructors can use Turnitin within Canvas courses.
  • Students access Turnitin functionality through assignments configured by their instructors.

How to request access

  • Turnitin is available through Canvas and does not require instructors to request access separately.

  •  Compare submitted work with a broad collection of sources, including student papers, websites, books, articles, and other published materials.
  • Generate a Similarity Report identifying text that matches content found in Turnitin's databases.
  • Choose the Turnitin workflow that best fits the needs of an assignment.
  • Turnitin integrates with Canvas and is available through two workflows:
  • Canvas Plagiarism Framework for similarity checking within a standard Canvas assignment.
  • Turnitin Feedback Studio external tool for instructors who need the more robust Turnitin experience.
