Getting Started with Proctorio (Students)

This service is only available if your instructor has enabled it for your course.

Proctorio will be available to all OHIO users effective July 1, 2026, with a student-pay model of $3 per exam.

Technical Requirements

System Requirements

  • Device: Windows, Mac, Chromebook, or Linux (Ubuntu); mobile (iOS + Android) devices are supported but may not be permitted for all assessments. 
  • Browser: Chrome, Edge, Brave, or Opera 
  • Connection: Ethernet or stable Wi-Fi 
  • Hardware: Webcam & microphone  
  • Photo ID (if required by instructor): Your instructor may require an Ohio University student ID or a valid government-issued ID. 

Get Proctorio 

  1. Open getproctorio.com in a supported browser. 
  2. Follow the instructions on the page to add the extension to your browser. 
  3. Pin the Proctorio extension to your browser toolbar to make it visible at all times. 

Managing the Proctorio Extension

Proctorio only works when its browser extension is enabled in a supported browser. You cannot take a proctored exam without it. When not taking a proctored exam, we recommend disabling the extension.

How to disable the extension (Chrome/Edge)

  1. Select the Extensions icon in your browser toolbar  
  2. Locate Proctorio  
  3. Toggle it off or select “Manage Extensions”  
  4. Turn off the extension

Restrictions  

  • No mobile devices: Exams must be taken on a desktop or laptop. 
  • Supported browser required: Proctorio only works in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, or Brave browsers.  
  • No virtual machines (VMs): These are not permitted and may block access to exams. 
  • Limited extensions: Other extensions may interfere and should be disabled. 

Helpful tips 

  • Make sure you are using the latest version of the Proctorio extension and your internet browser. 
  • Try to update your operating system before starting the exam. 
  • Disable extra applications or extensions during your exam. 
  • When possible, try sitting at a kitchen, coffee, or dining table with suitable natural or artificial lighting and a blank wall behind you. 
  • When possible, use an ethernet cable for a secure internet connection. 
  • Talk to your roommates, family, or friends to try to free up Wi-Fi usage during your exam to encourage a more stable connection. 

Preparing For an Exam

Before you begin  

  1. Make sure your device meets the minimum requirements
  2. Install the Proctorio extension from getproctorio.com
  3. Restart your device; close all other apps. 
  4. Disable all other browser extensions. 
  5. Choose a quiet space with no distractions. 
  6. Check the assessment instructions, gather what’s allowed, and clear away anything that’s not permitted. 

Paying For an Exam

  • All Proctorio exams require student pay; you will be prompted to pay after beginning the exam as part of the Pre-Check process. 
  • All exams cost $3 each.  

Taking an Exam

  1. Open your assessment and click Start or Begin. 
  2. Complete Pre-Checks (specific pre-checks needed will vary based on instructor requirements). 
    • Before You Begin: Lets you know what your instructor has enabled and any actions you must take before beginning your assessment 
    • Advanced Security: Install and open the Secure Companion App
    • System Diagnostics Test: Checks that your device and hardware are ready (Allow camera, microphone, and screen share access).  
    • Webcam Image Test: Takes a few photos to confirm your face is clear and centered. 
    • Identification Card: Used to capture your ID when needed.  
    • Desk Scan: Indicates a desk scan is required; complete it after the assessment page opens. 
    • Exam Agreement & Payment: Lets you review the terms and, if needed, submit payment. 
  3. Submit your assessment when you’re done. Proctorio will turn off automatically, and you can remove or disable the extension until your next assessment. 

Getting Help During an Exam

  • Click on the Secure Exam Proctor extension anytime after beginning your assessment to start a Live Chat. 

Privacy Concerns

  • Each tool that Ohio University uses has passed a thorough security review.  
  • For more information, review Proctorio’s Privacy Policy
  • Files are requested by authorized reviewers and decrypted on the reviewer's device when launching the Proctorio Review Center. At no point does Proctorio have access to unencrypted exam data. 
  • All exam data is encrypted on the student's device and stored in encrypted form in Azure data centers.
