Resolving mounted volume issues when using the campus VPN from Mac devices

Description

Mac users who access shared folder mounts from the Network Attached Storage (NAS) off campus can experience issues where their folders and files are not appearing correctly.

Environment

Mac

Solution

Note: Use the server name smb.ohio.edu (not shared.ohio.edu or home.ohio.edu) if you are connecting to the NAS via the campus VPN.

Before getting started, determine if you are using an alias on your desktop that was created in the past. If you are, delete it. Then, follow the steps below.

Connect via the SMB protocol

  1. From the Finder, select Command-K or select the Go menu and choose Connect to Server.

  2. Enter the appropriate address: smb://smb.ohio.edu[sharename]

    • When prompted, enter your OHIO ID and password.

  3. The NAS folders will open in a new Finder window.

    • For home folders, select the share name Home.

    • For shared storage, select your department from the list in the resulting Finder window.

Creating an alias

You can create an alias that will allow you to quickly and easily access mounted volumes on the NAS in the future.

  1. Select the mounted volume on your desktop.

  2. Select File.

  3. Select Make Alias or select Command (⌘)–L.

  4. This method should create an alias on your desktop, which will stay in place after the volume has been unmounted. Double-click the alias to ensure it jumps you straight to the log-in window.

Outcome: You should now be able to connect shared folder mounts of the NAS using your Mac, as well as create an alias for accessing mounted volumes in the future.
