Network File Storage (Personal and Shared)

Description

Secure, high-speed, on-campus Network Attached Storage (NAS) that can be mapped to a Windows network drive, mounted on a Mac via Command-K or accessed from off-campus locations via the VPN. Default quotas for individuals on home.ohio.edu are 20 GB. Departmental quotas on shared.ohio.edu are determined on a case-by-case basis.

Access

The directions below outline how to log in depending on the type of device you are using.

Windows

  1. If you are connecting from off-campus, make sure you enable Campus VPN before continuing.

  2. Enter the appropriate address into the "Run" (Windows 7) or "Search the web and Windows" box (Windows 10):

    • \\home.ohio.edu\home for personal storage

    • \\shared.ohio.edu for departmental, shared storage

  3. If prompted, enter your OHIO ID and password

  4. Your folder will open in a file explorer window

    • For shared storage, select your department from the list in the resulting file explorer window

Mac OS

  1. If you are connecting from off-campus, make sure you enable Campus VPN before continuing.

  2. Enter the appropriate address:

    • smb://home.ohio.edu/home for personal storage

    • smb://shared.ohio.edu for departmental, shared storage

  3. If prompted, enter your OHIO ID and password

  4. Your folder will open in a new Finder window

    • For shared storage, select your department from the list in the resulting Finder window

Who can access

  • Home folders: Current employees, current graduate students, retirees.

  • Shared folders: By departmental request. Access to an existing shared folder is subject to approval by that folder's departmental data owner(s).

How to request access

Individual folders

  • No request is needed. Folders on home.ohio.edu are issued automatically based on your role at the University.

Departmental folders

Features
