Getting Started with IgniteAI

Canvas has introduced several AI-powered tools under the label of IgniteAI. These features are designed to save faculty time, enhance communication, and provide clearer insights into student learning while encouraging intentional, responsible integration of AI in teaching. We recommend reviewing the Center for Teaching and Learning's (CTLA) guidance on AI in teaching to ensure these tools are used in ways that support course objectives, promote student success, and align with institutional expectations.

IgniteAI features may be enabled at the institution, account, or course level. Check your course Feature Options settings for the most current list of available tools. You can schedule a consultation with an OIT instructional technologist to discuss how to maximize these types of tools and features.

AI Nutrition Facts

Canvas provides an AI Nutrition Facts page for each IgniteAI-powered feature, helping users understand the underlying AI technology, data handling practices, and intended use cases. These look like “ingredient labels” that you might find on food items at your grocery store and explain which AI models are being used and how data is handled. Below is an example of what these facts look like.

IgniteAI Search

IgniteAI Search, delivers contextual AI to help all Canvas users find relevant course content more efficiently. IgniteAI Search can search the following content within a course: content pages, announcements, discussion prompts, and assignment descriptions. It cannot search PDFs, Word documents, external tools, files, or uploaded content.

Examples of how this feature can be used include:

• Quickly jump to a specific assignment or quiz – Instead of scrolling through modules, just search by name when you need to update instructions, change dates, or adjust settings.
• Find student discussions or posts – Search by keyword (like “Week 3 reflection”) to locate and review student contributions without digging through multiple threads.
• Locate announcements – Easily find past announcements to reuse wording or check what you’ve already told students.

IgniteAI Summaries for Discussions

IgniteAI Summaries for Discussions provides instructors with a summary of key points, questions, and ideas in a discussion thread, making it easier to track participation. This feature is designed to save instructors time and to allow discussions to be used effectively in large-format classes and other environments where they were previously infeasible. These summaries are intended for instructor use and are not visible to students.

Instructors may find this feature useful for:

• Quick overview of student participation – Instead of reading every post, you can get a concise summary of the main themes and contributions.
• Spot misconceptions – Summaries highlight common points, making it easier to notice if students misunderstood a concept.
• Prepare for class discussions – Walk into class with a snapshot of what students have already discussed online, so you can extend the conversation rather than repeat it.
• Save time in large courses – For courses with dozens or hundreds of students, summaries help you keep up without having to skim every single reply.

Canvas offers multiple translation capabilities to support communication and engagement in multilingual learning environments. 

Translations for Discussions and Announcements allow instructors and students to translate discussion topics, discussion replies, and course announcements into supported languages. This capability must be enabled within the course before it can be used. 

Inbox Translation enables Canvas users to translate Inbox messages, helping facilitate communication among individuals who speak different languages. 

Examples of how translation features can support teaching and learning include:

• Enable clearer communication through Inbox messages – Instructors and students can communicate more effectively without relying on external translation tools.
• Improve access to course announcements – Students can read important course updates, reminders, and instructor communications in their preferred language, helping ensure key information is understood.
• Support multilingual classrooms – Faculty can more easily teach and communicate with students from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
• Reduce reliance on external translation tools – Translation features reduce the need to copy content into third-party translation services, saving time.
