Using Microsoft Translator to Enhance Classroom Communication

 If you are using the Microsoft Education integration in your Canvas courses, Microsoft Translator can be incorporated into your Teams, PowerPoint presentations, or shared Word documents. The tool is also available through Microsoft 365 and as a standalone mobile application. This tool can be a great resource for teaching and learning activities by providing text, speech, conversation, and presentation translation in real time.

Microsoft Translator supports multilingual communication between teachers and learners and also assists users who need adaptive vision or hearing supports with the Translator app. Translate learning activities and presentations in real time and bridge languages with the multi-device conversation feature. Translate Text in Microsoft 365 Applications

Many Microsoft 365 applications include built-in translation tools that allow users to quickly translate selected text or entire documents.

To translate content in Microsoft 365:

  1. Open your document, email, presentation, or notebook.
  2. Select the text you want to translate, or choose to translate the entire document if available.
  3. On the Review tab, select Translate.
  4. Choose the desired language.
  5. Review the translated content and insert or copy it as needed.

Use Microsoft Translator for Conversations

Microsoft Translator supports multilingual conversations between participants using different devices and languages.

To start a translated conversation:

  1. Open the Microsoft Translator app or visit the Microsoft Translator website.
  2. Select Conversation.
  3. Start a new conversation and share the conversation code or QR code with participants.
  4. Participants join using their preferred language.
  5. As participants speak or type, messages are translated and displayed in each participant's selected language.

Translate Presentations

Microsoft Translator can help make presentations more accessible by providing live translated captions for audience members.

To use translated captions during a presentation:

  1. Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
  2. Select Slide Show and enable Subtitles Settings.
  3. Choose the spoken language and subtitle language.
  4. Start the presentation.
  5. Audience members can view translated captions on their devices when supported.
