How to Ensure your Device is Up to Date

Description

Keeping your device up to date is crucial for maintaining security and performance.  Regular updates ensure you have the latest features, bug fixes, and protection against vulnerabilities.   

Environment

PC, Mac 

Ensure your device is up to date 

Mac

  1. Select the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen. 
  2. Choose System Settings from the menu. 
  3. Select General in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down). 
  4. Select Software Update on the right. 
  5. If there’s an update available, follow the onscreen instructions to install it.

Outcome: You can now check to see if your Mac is up to date.

PC

Windows 10

  1. Open the Start Menu.
  2. Select the gear icon to open Settings
  3. When the settings window opens, select Update & Security. 
  4. In the next window opens, select Check for updates.
  5. If updates are available, install them. 
  6. After the updates install, you may be prompted to restart your PC. 

Windows 11

  1. Open the Start Menu. Select the gear icon labeled Settings. If Settings has been unpinned, it may not appear in this window. If this occurs, select All apps, then scroll down the list of options until you find Settings and select it.
  2. When the menu opens, select Windows Update on the bottom left hand side.
  3. In the next window, on the right side, select Check for updates.
  4. If updates are available, install them. 
  5. After the updates install, you may be prompted to restart your PC. 

Outcome: You can now check to see if your PC is up to date.
