Enable a Microsoft Team in Your Canvas Course

Description 

This article provides instructions for enabling a Microsoft Team in your Canvas course using the Microsoft Education integration. Once enabled, a Teams Class is automatically created and synced with your course enrollment. 

Solution 

Step 1: Enable Microsoft Sync 

Before creating your Team, you must enable Microsoft Sync within your Canvas course. 

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course 

  1. Select Settings from the course navigation menu 

  1. Select the Integrations tab 

  1. Toggle Microsoft Sync to On (toggle should be to the right) 

  1. Select Sync Now 

Note: If you plan to cross-list or merge courses, complete that process before enabling Microsoft Sync. 

Step 2: Open Microsoft Education 

  1. In your Canvas course navigation menu, select Microsoft Education 

  1. Select Continue Setup 

Note: You will likely be prompted to sign into Microsoft with your OHIO credentials to continue. This may include being asked to authenticate and authorize. 

Step 3: Enable Teams 

  1. Select General 

  1. Check the box for Teams 

  1. Select Done 

Your Teams Class will begin provisioning. This may take a few minutes. 

Step 4: Access and Activate Your Team 

  1. Access through Microsoft Education 

    1. Select Microsoft Education from the course navigation menu 
    2. Select Teams from the dashboard 
    3. Select the Open option on the tile which contains your Team name. 
    4. This will either open Teams within your browser, or prompt you to open within the Teams application. 
    5. From your list of Teams Classes, find the tile that matches the appropriate class. 
    6. Select the Activate button. 
    7. Confirm activation in the pop-up window. Your Class Team is now viewable to students. 
    8. To open the Class Team, select the tile that matches the appropriate class.

  2. Access through Microsoft Teams 
    1. Open the Microsoft Teams application or in your browser 
    2. Click on the Teams menu option on the left-side navigation to see a list of all your teams. 
    3. From your list of Teams Classes, find the tile that matches the appropriate class. 
    4. Select the Activate button. 
    5. Confirm activation in the pop-up window. Your Class Team is now viewable to students. 
    6. To open the Class Team, select the tile that matches the appropriate class.

You can create a Team now with these instructions as a backup if there is ever an interruption with Canvas. You can activate whenever you are ready to use it.  

Additional Information 

  • The Teams Class is automatically created using your course name and enrollment 

  • Student enrollment is synced automatically, including adds/drops 

  • Students can access the Team:  

  • Through the Canvas course navigation 

  • Directly via the Microsoft Teams app or browser
