  1. The window will show that the update is downloading, then it will switch to "installing." During these two phases, you can continue to use your computer.

  1. After the installer finishes, your computer will prompt you to reboot. Once the reboot begins, your computer will be unusable until it finishes applying the update. Typically, this takes between 1 and 2 hours.

Troubleshooting

If neither of the above options work, you can go directly to Microsoft’s page and run their upgrade Installation Assistant tool. Users at Ohio University should choose “Enterprise” when presented with version options. If you have any questions, please submit a ticket to the Technology Help Center

Outcome: Your Windows 11 PC is updated to a supported version.

Why is this update required?

Windows 11 was originally released in October 2021 with subsequent major updates in September 2022 and October 2023.  Another major release should be available each Fall until Microsoft eventually announces an end-of-service date.

This is similar to the release schedule that Windows 10 had during the lifespan.  With Windows 10 there were 14 major releases from July 2015 through October 2022. The only release of Windows 10 that is still supported is the final version and support will end in October 2025.  By October 2025, all Windows computers will need to be updated to Windows 11 or higher.
