Description
Using Assignment Groups allows you to organize the assignments in your course. When Assignment Groups are set up, you can weight the final course grade by assignment groups and filter by assignment groups in the Gradebook.
Please note: In Canvas, Assignment Groups are categories that each assignment gets placed under. For example, “Quizzes”, “Discussions”, or “Weekly Reflections”.

Log in to Canvas at canvas.ohio.edu

Navigate to your course via the Courses tab in the left navigation menu

In Course Navigation, select the Assignments link

Select the Add Group button

Type the Assignment Group Name in the Group Name field. If you want to weight the final grade for students using assignment groups, the percentage will appear in % of total grade field.

Select the Save button
Outcome: You should now be able to create Assignment Groups to organize and weight your Canvas course assessments.

Assignment Groups vs. Student Groups
Assignment Groups organize course assessments for grading and grade weighting. Student Groups organize students into teams for collaboration, group discussions, and group assignments. For Student Groups, instructors can:
- Create Group Sets from the People page
- Create group discussions
- Create group assignments
- Choose to grade students individually or as a group
- Use SpeedGrader filters to review submissions by group
Student groups can be created by navigating to the People link in Course Navigation and selecting the Add Group Set button.
