Using Grade Weighting in Canvas

You can weight final grades in Canvas based on assignment groups. Selecting this option assigns a weight to each assignment group, not the assignments themselves. Within each assignment group, a percentage is calculated by dividing the total points a student has earned by the total points possible for all assignments in that group.

Please note: In Canvas, Assignment Groups are categories that each assignment gets placed under. For example, “Quizzes”, “Discussions”, or “Weekly Reflections”. Please do not confuse this with Group Assignments in Blackboard, which are used to create assignments that a group of students will complete as a team.

Canvas in your web browser

  1. Log in to Canvas at

  1. Navigate to your course via the Courses tab in the left navigation menu

  2. In Course Navigation, select the Assignments link

  3. Select the Assignments Options icon (three-dot menu) and select the Assignment Groups Weights option

  4. Select the Weight final grade based on assignment groups checkbox

  5. Enter the percentage weights for each of the different Assignment Groups you create. The percentage weights you specify here will determine how Canvas calculates the final grade for your course. These percentages can be changed at any time and students will be notified when any changes are made. The weights will show up in the Gradebook for both students and instructors

  6. Select the Save button

Additional Notes:

  • Assignment group weights can include decimals.

  • The total percentage of all assignment groups can be set above or below 100%.

  • For step-by-step instructions on adding assignment groups, view the Adding Assignment Groups in Canvas help article.

Outcome: You should now be able to weight grades based on assignment groups and see those reflected in the Canvas Gradebook.
