Adding Assignment Groups in Canvas

Description

Using Assignment Groups allows you to organize the assignments in your course. When Assignment Groups are set up, you can weight the final course grade by assignment groups and filter by assignment groups in the Gradebook.

Please note: In Canvas, Assignment Groups are categories that each assignment gets placed under. For example, “Quizzes”, “Discussions”, or “Weekly Reflections”. Please do not confuse this with Group Assignments in Blackboard, which are used to create assignments that a group of students will complete as a team.

Solution

  1. Log in to Canvas at  canvas.ohio.edu

  1. Navigate to your course via the Courses tab in the left navigation menu

  2. In Course Navigation, select the Assignments link

  3. Select the Add Group button

  4. Type the Assignment Group Name in the Group Name field. If you want to weight the final grade for students using assignment groups, the percentage will appear in % of total grade field.

    • Note: You must create assignment groups before you can assign percentages to each group

  5. Select the Save button

Outcome: You should now be able to create Assignment Groups to organize and weight your Canvas course assessments.
